RV Converter Not Charging Batteries: How to Diagnose
You are plugged into shore power, but your batteries keep going dead and your 12V lights are dim. The converter, the device that turns 120V shore power into 12V DC power and battery charging, is the prime suspect. But converters get blamed for a lot of failures that are actually a five dollar fuse or a corroded battery connection. Here is the ten minute diagnostic that tells you the truth before you spend money.
What the Converter Actually Does
When you are plugged in, the converter does two jobs: it powers your 12V systems (lights, fans, furnace board, water pump) and it charges the house batteries. When the converter fails, everything 12V runs off the batteries alone until they die. The classic symptom is that everything works fine for a day or two on shore power and then progressively browns out as the batteries drain.
The Ten Minute Multimeter Test
Step 1: Measure at the Battery, Unplugged
With the RV unplugged from shore power, measure DC voltage across the house battery terminals. A healthy charged battery reads roughly 12.6V at rest. Write down what you see. If it reads below 12V, your batteries are significantly discharged, which is consistent with a charging failure but also with old batteries.
Step 2: Plug In and Measure Again
Plug into shore power, wait two minutes, and measure the battery terminals again. If the converter is charging, the reading should jump to somewhere between 13.2V and 14.4V depending on the charging stage. That voltage rise is the entire test. If you see 13.2V or higher at the battery with shore power connected, the converter is working and your problem is elsewhere, usually the batteries themselves. If the voltage does not rise at all, the charging path is broken somewhere between the converter and the battery.
If the Voltage Does Not Rise
Check the Reverse Polarity Fuses
Nearly every converter has two inline fuses, usually 30 or 40 amp blade fuses, mounted right on the converter's DC output board. These are reverse polarity fuses, and they blow instantly if the battery was ever connected backwards, even for a second, even by the previous owner. Blown reverse polarity fuses are the single most common converter complaint, and the converter itself is perfectly fine. Pull them and check them visually or with a continuity meter.
Check the AC Side
Confirm the converter is actually receiving 120V power. Find which circuit breaker in your AC panel feeds the converter and confirm it is on. Some converters plug into a standard outlet behind a panel or under the bed; make sure that outlet is live (it may be on a GFCI circuit that tripped elsewhere in the rig).
Check the Battery Connections
Corroded or loose battery terminals can block charging current entirely while still letting small loads work. Clean the terminals and the ground connection where it lands on the frame.
When the Converter Is Actually Bad
If the converter has good 120V in, good fuses, clean connections, and still delivers no voltage rise at the battery, the converter has failed. Two more signs that point the same way: a loud continuous buzzing from the converter, and a cooling fan that never runs even under heavy 12V load. Replacement is straightforward, and if you are replacing anyway, consider upgrading to a multi stage smart charger; it will noticeably extend battery life compared to the single stage units many RVs ship with.
